Why are American and British people always being compared?

Why are American and British people always being compared when there are other English speaking countries out there? I mean there is Canada, Australia, Singapore and many others. I mean damn, whenever something is said British TV has to be thrown in the conversation, or American food, or British habits or American looks. Its obvious we are two different countries and not the same by any means, we don’t even look like british black or white people. Even british asians kind of look different but that’s the whole point in it being a different country. Someone please explain to me why we are always being compared.

The British and the Americans share a lot of history. They were both deeply involved in the translantic slave trade and were allies during the war. Also many Americans are decendants of the British therefore the cultures are interlinked.

I didn’t know that we were always compared. If anything i see Canada and America being compared more than the UK and the USA.
I’m British and i personally feel that Britain has more in common with any European country and Australia than it does America. Anyone who thinks that Britain and America are the same just because we speak the same language is an idiot.
I do agree with the first answer though, there is some shared history but in modern times we have very little in common.

Britain looks eastward towards Europe and America looks westward towards the Pacific. Britain may as well be France or Liechtenstein when compared to the USA.
American culture has so little to do with modern English culture. The misconceptions about each other are amazing.
What I hope proves durable is the famous “special relationship” between our two countries that we’ve enjoyed over the years. But apparently change is indeed inevitable.
Wouldn’t it be interesting if the two countries exchanged weather! America cool and rainy, the UK experiencing tornadoes in the night and Hurricane Katrinas. Not to kill anybody, or anything. Just to illustrate how different our two worlds are now.

Everyone assumes our country is very similar to the US, it is so annoying! I have never even been to America but I know there are so many differences!!

I knew I was right. My friend and I placed a bet about which web site was superior.
